The roles and restrictions for Muslim women have been controversial for years and years to the point where Muslim women have been lumped into a single identity: “the Muslimwoman.” The Muslimwoman has come to represent the entire Muslim community and therefore must appear to be pure and moral, leading Muslim men to further regulate women’s behavior. The cage of the Muslimwoman is represented by the veil–an object of contention in secular and non-secular societies in which the state rules that women must or must not wear it and women fight for their rights to wear it if they please. This piece concludes with a roundtable discussion and reactions to the article.
