Feminist Transgressions in the Postcolonial Arab World (1999)

In the past twenty-five years Arab women have taken great strides through the freedoms that postcoloniality have brought to them. Unfortunately, it was wars and struggles that allowed and encouraged women to begin their “transgressions” into the man’s world; watching Algerian women be marginalized as a result of their silence during their civil war, other Arab women began documenting and recording their own war experiences. Now Arab women have transgressed a step further into analyzing and reinterpreting scripture. In the past, the Quran was only interpreted and explained by men. The system which women have been using to reinterpret scripture and history is a system of “multiple critique.”
